Bungie Almost Made a Destiny Dating Sim… And Honestly, We Missed Out

Yes, this was real. Bungie developers actually built a Destiny dating sim prototype, but leadership shut it down fast. And with everything happening at the studio right now, it might be one of the biggest “what ifs” the franchise has ever had.

Let’s just say it straight.

A Destiny dating sim almost existed.

Not a joke. Not a meme. Not a Reddit fever dream. A real, playable prototype… built by Bungie developers themselves.

And somehow, we never got it.

Wait… Destiny Dating Sim? Seriously?

Here’s the wild part. This wasn’t some throwaway idea scribbled on a whiteboard.

According to former Bungie community lead Liana Ruppert, the team actually made a working version of a Destiny dating sim. Even better, it was heavily inspired by Dream Daddy — which should immediately tell you the kind of energy they were going for.

Yeah. That energy.

Lighthearted, character-driven, maybe a bit ridiculous. Exactly the kind of curveball Destiny never dares to throw.

But here’s the catch. Leadership shut it down hard. The reason? They believed players didn’t want romance or “silliness” in Destiny.

No romance. No nonsense. Just… endless shooting and lore tabs, apparently.

It Started As A Fun Experiment… Then Got Serious

This wasn’t a full production game at first. It came out of Bungie’s internal “Carnival” event, where developers get about a week to prototype whatever wild ideas they want.

Think of it like a creative pressure cooker. No rules. No expectations.

And naturally, someone said:
“What if we let players date Destiny characters?”

Perfect.

But it didn’t stop there.

A small group of devs kept pushing the idea every year. They didn’t just pitch vibes either. They built proper pitch decks, outlined costs, and even projected returns.

This wasn’t a joke anymore. It was a real proposal.

And it still got rejected. Every. Single. Time.

The Real Reason It Never Happened

Let’s be fair for a second.

As funny and brilliant as a Destiny dating sim sounds, Bungie leadership wasn’t entirely wrong to hesitate.

Destiny is a massive live service machine. Every dev hour matters. Every decision gets scrutinised by a community that already complains when content feels thin.

Imagine the backlash if this leaked mid-season:

“Why are devs making a dating sim when PvP is broken?”

You can already see it, right?

Even developers acknowledged that a side project like this could easily be spun as a waste of time while Destiny 2 needed support elsewhere.

And if you think that sounds dramatic, just look at how players reacted to Marathon, a full AAA shooter. The community isn’t exactly known for its chill takes lately.

So yeah. Risky move.

But still… come on. You know it would’ve been incredible.

The Bigger Picture: Bungie Isn’t In A Playful Place Right Now

Here’s where things get a little less fun.

This story hit at a rough time for Bungie.

The studio is reportedly heading into “significant” layoffs following the winding down of Destiny 2’s development.

On top of that, Destiny 3 isn’t currently in active development.

Let that sink in.

No Destiny 3.
No clear next step.
And a team facing major restructuring.

That context matters. A lot.

Because it explains why ideas like a dating sim never made it past the pitch stage. Bungie hasn’t been in a position to take creative risks. It’s been trying to stabilise.

When your flagship game is ending and your next move is uncertain, you don’t greenlight experimental spin-offs. You play it safe.

Even if “playing it safe” means saying no to something genuinely different.

The Destiny “What If” That Hurts A Little

Here’s the thing.

Destiny isn’t lacking in characters. If anything, it’s overflowing with them.

Cayde-6. Mara Sov. Shaxx. Crow. Eris. Saint-14.

You’re telling me there wasn’t potential there?

This could’ve been a weird, self-aware, fan-favourite spin-off. Something smaller. Something fun. Something that reminds players the universe doesn’t always have to be so serious.

Instead, it’s another “what could’ve been.”

And honestly, that might be the most frustrating part.

So… Could This Ever Come Back?

Realistically? Don’t hold your breath.

With ongoing layoffs, a shifting strategy, and no Destiny 3 in development, Bungie’s focus is survival and stability right now.

That kind of environment doesn’t produce experimental dating sims.

But here’s a thought.

If the industry has proven anything lately, it’s that weird ideas win. Unexpected spin-offs. Genre mashups. Games that don’t take themselves too seriously.

Maybe Bungie missed the moment.

Or maybe… someone else picks up the idea.

Because let’s be honest.

If a Destiny-style dating sim ever does get made, you’re trying it.

Don’t even pretend you wouldn’t.
